Charleston Decides to Self-Relegate for 2010 Season

In the wake of the on-going USL soap opera that has been unfolding since summer, the Charleston Battery announced their intentions to relegate themselves to the USL Second Division for the upcoming 2010 season.
The Battery was never a member of the Team Owners Association, and in fact at one point was the only member of the USL First Division that wasn’t, and apparently no longer saw playing in what is shaping up to be a fractured First Division as a financially viable option. The TOA recently added the Tampa Bay Rowdies and Crystal Palace Baltimore to it’s ranks, as Kartik reports here. ...

... Federation for sanctioning as a Division II Men’s Outdoor Professional League. NASL is also active in its search for a full-time commissioner and will introduce an extensive marketing campaign in the coming months. Two other notes: As of the moment, NASL.com is the website of the North Alabama Soccer League, and it does not appear that the new NASL has any immediate web presence ready. Additionally, as possible fallout of the USL/TOA tiff, Charleston Battery have self-relegated from USL-1 to USL-2 for the 2010 season .

So the news came down today that the TOA league would be dubbed the new North American Soccer League. Yes the return of the NASL is possibly more about the name than the actual league here. The TOA group went for name recognition right away with this choice.
The league has nine clubs now that Tampa and Baltimore have jumped ship and they could look to add a tenth with the possibility of Rochester leaving the USL after 2010.
Currently there are only 5 teams remaining from last year’s USL-1 season. Austin, Cleveland, Portland, Puerto Rico and Rochester, with the expansion team of New York bringing the league to 6. Some ...
