Arsenal 2-0 Standard Liege – comfortable passage but bad news on the injury front
The Beautiful Groan —
... The second half played out like a training match – we were looking for the match-ending third goal while conserving energy for Sunday. To Liege’s credit, they never gave up, although their frustration led to some poor late challenges, one of which broke Gibbs’ metatarsal. The official site reports him as needing an operation and three months recovery, which means it is a particularly bad break. It is a real blow to club and player – he was doing a decent job of staking his claim for the left back slot until that point. ...

... To finish a bad night off we have the possibility of William Gallas missing out on Chelsea after an ugly head clash and the announcement that Kieran Gibbs will be out for up to three months after breaking his foot. It’s a huge blow, particularly considering it happened with just 15 seconds to go, and you probably don’t need me reminding you it was the result of an horrible tackle by a Standard player and a short corner from Arshavin. Infuriating. ...

... at half-time–I assumed that it was because he took a nasty blow to the head when he and Arshavin tried to head the same ball (his eye was nearly swollen shut by the end of the half), but apparently he has an ankle issue, too. No word on how serious it is or whether he’ll be available for Chelsea on Sunday. More certain is the diagnosis of Kieran Gibbs, who, as cruel fate would have it, injured his foot a couple of minutes into injury time right before the final whistle. Broken metatarsal in his left foot, out for around 3 months. Frak. When I first saw it and read ...

... It is typical Brazilian technique and I tried to analyse it many times. I could only think maybe they have a bit shorter ankle in front and they can kick the ball high up with the laces.” What an astute observation. It must have required hours of research. Arsene?“I have never checked it.” Ah. Ok then, boss. The bad news, then - apart from the manager’s sudden senility. Well, we’ve picked up a few injuries: Andrey Arshavin and William Gallas both suffered blows to the head, but Kieran Gibbs’s bruised metatarsal has now metamorphosed into a broken one , and he’s expected ...
Arsenal 2-0 Standard Liege – 24/11/09 – (Champions League)
The Cannon —
... Right at the end we paid for Liege’s strong challenges. Kieran Gibbs, who has just come back from a bruised metatarsal has now broken his foot and will be out for 2-3 months. Just when he thought he had a bit of luck just coming off with a bruising with England, he’s now really going to miss his chance whilst Clichy is out. It’s a terrible shame for Gibbs and I hope he makes a strong recovery. ...

Kieran Gibbs' run of bad luck has continued with the news that he is to undergo surgery on the first metatarsal fracture that he sustained against Standard Liege in the Champions League back in November . From a medical perspective it is slightly strange that he has a non healing first metatarsal fracture, given that it was operated on initially. If the fracture was bad enough to need surgery initially then one would have expected the fracture to have been fixed at that point to improve the chances of it healing. Either way it is very unlucky for Gibbs as 1st metatarsal ...
